The Shakuhachi (Japanese: 尺八, pronounced [ɕakɯhat͡ɕi]; Chinese: 尺八; pinyin: chǐbā) is an ancient Japanese and Chinese flute made of bamboo. The bamboo flute, known today as the shakuhachi, was developed in Japan in the 16th century and is known as the Fuke Shakuhachi (普). The bamboo flute, known as ancient shakuhachi (古代 尺八, ancient shakuhachi), is very different from today's shakuhachi style and was introduced to Japan from China in the 7th century and became extinct in the 10th century.
